Crews Locate Lost Hiker Above Indio Hills

A 45-year-old hiker who became lost and ran out of water above the Indio Hills area of the Coachella Valley was resuced Friday afternoon, and taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.

The rescue effort was launched after the hiker called 911, said Sgt. Joe Borja of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The hiker, who left from the 31000 block of Northwood Road, called for help at 11:04 a.m.

“He says he is out of water, but he does have a cell phone,” Borja said.

A helicopter crew was sent to the area, and sheriff’s deputies helped locate him, according to the sergeant.

He was rescued about 1:27 p.m., and transported for heat exhaustion.
