Community Leaders Dedicate Roy Wilson Scenic Highway
Assemblyman Brian Nestande, members of Roy Wilson’s family and community leaders gathered to dedicate a portion of State Highway 74 as the Roy Wilson Memorial Highway. The ceremony took place at the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center in Palm Desert.
The bill names four miles of State Highway 74 south of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Mounument Visitor Center after the late Supervisor Roy Wilson. The bill was sponsored by the Friends of the Desert Mountains, Coachella Valley Association of Governments, and the Coachella Valley Mountains Conservancy. The bill was co-authored by Senator Denise Moreno Ducheny.
The city of Palm Desert also renamed a portion of the highway as S. Roy Wilson Scenic Highway.
The late county supervisor was an avid environmentalist and also loved Highway 74. “His home was just off of 74, so wherever he goes it was on 74,” said Wilson’s brother Jim. “So for me, for 45 years this has been Roy Wilson Drive. And I think this is a tremendous honor for him.”
