Young Voters Impact The Upcoming Elections

A bipartisan poll commissioned by Rock the Vote shows young adults between the ages of 18 – 29 are paying attention to the mid-term elections. About 77 percent surveyed said they were likely or somewhat likely to vote next Tuesday.

At College of the Desert, when students were asked what was the driving force behind them casting their ballot, hands down they said it’s the chance to weigh-in on Proposition 19. If passed it will change California law allowing people over the age of 21 to use and cultivate small amounts of marijuana.

“I’ve never smoked, I don’t know if I ever plan to, but it does seem like a positive way to get some money pouring into California,” said 18 year old first year student William Crook.

While the passage of Proposition 19 would allow counties and cities to tax the sales of marijuana, 25 year old Cristina Aburto who is studying early childhood education doesn’t agree with her classmate.

“My issue is if it’s gonna have the same laws as alcohol and tobacco what’s to say people aren’t going to do it around children and I don’t feel it should be allowed around children in any shape or form,” said Aburto.

Opposing views on Propositon 19, but all the students we spoke to agreed they didn’t care for the barrage of negative campaign ads that have been running on television and radio.
