911 Tapes From Cathedral City Shooting Released
The suspected gang members who gunned down a 16-year-old mother while holding her baby in Cathedral City last week are still on the run.
Yanize Mora’s baby was also shot but survived.
A young man was also killed.
Six people in total were wounded.
Investigators are looking for a light skinned clean shaven Latino man between the ages of 20 and 25 years old.
He was last seen wearing a black beanie.
Investigators say he was driving the car in the the drive-by and played a major role in the shooting and on Tuesday, authorities released the 911 tapes of the drive-by.
Caller: “We just heard the shots fired.” Operator: “You just heard shots? Okay.” Caller: “Yes.” Operator: “We have officers on the way.”
Dispatchers fielded call after call.
Some were calm describing chaos from afar.
Caller: “Me and my dad and my mom and my kids heard, um, a lot of gunshots and people are screaming.”
Others were hysterical.
Caller: “(Inaudible) Hurry.” Operator: “Okay. Listen to verify. One is shot.” Caller: “There are three injured.” Operator: “Listen to me. This is going down on Asistencia? Caller: “Yeah.” Operator: “(Inaudible) How many people are shot?” Caller: “There are three. But y’all better hurry up. Come on.”
Witnesses demanded that authorities rush to the Dream Homes area of Cathedral City.
Blood was shed and bodies were scattered on the ground.
Operator: “911. What’s you emergency?” Caller: “Yeah, we got three victims down on Asistencia road, Cathedral City. We got three people shot down. We need assistance right now.”
Authorities learned quickly, through callers, that a car was involved in the shooting.
Operator: “Who shot them? Who shot them?” Caller: “They did. They did a drive-by.” Operator: “It was a drive-by. Do you remember what the car looked like?” Caller: “No. I don’t know what kind of car it was.”
But one caller was able to provide a description of the vehicle.
He saw it drive off.
Caller: “It was a cream colored, tan colored Chevy HHR. It already left and went out the neighborhood.” Operator: “Did you see which… Did you see which way they went?” Caller: “Yeah. It traveled south towards Walmart.”
But the car has not been found.
The suspects are still at large.
“For those animals that did that to her,” said Anel Rodriguez, Mora’s aunt. “How could you? How could you do that? Why would you do that to her?”
The community has rallied behind Mora’s family.
Several fundraisers have been held since the shooting to help pay for her funeral and for her 2-month-old baby boy Isaiah’s medical services.
More than a hundred people showed up at the Aqua Soliel Hotel and Mineral Water Spa to drop off donations for tacos.
“If I could thank each and every single person out here that’s made it, I want to take the time to thank everybody for helping us and supporting us,” said Rodriguez.
Rodriguez says this tragedy has burned a hole through the families heart, leaving a wound that may never heal.
“Its devastating to have a beautiful smiling girl taken away from us,” she said. “A cousin, a niece, a daughter, a granddaughter, a mother to be taken way from us the way she was taken away.”
The baby is recovering from last week’s surgery at Loma Linda hospital.
Soon he will be moved to a foster care medical center for rehab and then he will be returned to his family.
