16-Year-Old Arrested For Hit-And-Run Accident Involving Mother And Children
A 16-year-old boy was arrested today on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol in a hit-and-run crash that injured an 8-year-old boy, a sheriff’s lieutenant said.
The crash was reported about 9 a.m. on Avenue 52 east of Washington Street, according to Lt. Jason Huskey of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
A woman was driving east on Avenue 52 when another vehicle slammed into the back of her minivan, forcing her into a center divider and a tree, Huskey said.
The van overturned and landed on its top, trapping the woman and her three children inside, the lieutenant said.
A passerby and a bicyclist stopped to help the family escape from the wreck, and a witness took note of the suspect vehicle’s license plate, according to Huskey.
Only one of the family members — an 8-year-old boy — suffered a broken arm, and the rest were unhurt, he said.
Investigators tracked the license plate to a home on Avenida Carranza, where deputies found the teenager, who was taken into custody about 11:30 a.m., Huskey said.
Police believe the suspect, whose name was withheld because of his age, was under the influence of marijuana and alcohol, according to the lieutenant.
