Healing Field Memorial Still a Target For Vandals
This is the fifth year for the Healing Field Memorial in Cathedral City.
Thousands of flags are there to honor U.S. troops who have lost their lives in the war on terror.
Once again, vandalism is a big problem. Flags have been stolen.
Earlier this week, a flag was found — burned — behind a nearby business. Friday morning, a volunteer spotted someone trying to steal another flag, before he was scared off.
“By the time I got up there, I saw the kid going over the fence. He was flying,” said Ken Fort, a member of the Desert Riders Association.
Many in the group volunteer to watch over the Healing Field. Fort says, out there, he’s protecting more than just flags.
“When these flags, when names go on, these could be crosses in a military cemetery. This week, this goes from an ordinary park to hallowed ground,” said Fort.
For all those who stop to pay tribute — these stories of vandalism are something they just don’t understand.
“It’s really a disgrace to the men and women who wear our uniforms and protect us. Some people don’t value the freedom they give us and provide for us,” said Indio resident Mark Borden.
Members of Desert Riders are now trying to do a 24-hour watch — making sure at least three to four people are on the grounds at all times, until Sunday’s closing ceremony.
