Attempted Jail Break in Indio, Officer Involved Shooting

Two inmates tried to escape the Riverside County Jail in Indio Saturday night, just before 8 p.m.

The inmates have been identified as 27 year old Nicholas Corleto and 28 year old Robert Dunson.

Authorities say the men managed to get on to the roof, then tried to jump down and make a run for it. One of the inmates made it to the ground, but both were taken into custody before they could leave the property.

A deputy on the ground fired one round, hitting one of the inmates. That inmate was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

It’s still unclear how the inmates got outside the jail, or what led up to the shooting.

The jail was put on lockdown throughout the night.

The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.

Investigators say both inmates were jailed for violent crimes and would have been an immediate threat to the public had they escaped.
