Holiday Shoppers Scramble For Last-Minute Gifts
The holiday music echoing throughout the Westfield Shoppingtown kept shoppers in the buying spirit.
“I was all done and caught up and home ready for Christmas,” said Judy Austin. “And I decided to go shopping.”
But some shoppers scrambled through the mall to get gifts under the tree.
“I’m running back to JCPenney’s for another purchase!” said Nancy Dicken. “I usually have it done way in advance, but I’m running a little late this year.”
The steady rain and flash floods kept shoppers home. Westfield management said the mall was quiet during the beginning of the week, but it picked up pace on Wednesday.
“Four days out here, and all the roads closed!” said John Walters-Clark, of Cathedral City. “I live near Vista Chino where the mud was everywhere.”
Judy Austin added: “I haven’t been out very much. That’s probably why I’m enjoying today. I’m not under pressure.”
According to ShopperTrak, holiday shoppers are racing to the end of the season at a more feverish pace this year. Revenue is up 5.5% compared to last year.
Locals are not surprised by that statistic. “I’ve been watching what I’ve been spending. But, people seem to be spending more,” said Dicken.
Here’s hoping Santa can steer his sleigh through all that mud.
The Westfield Shoppingtown will remain open Thursday until 11:00 p.m. It will be open Friday, Christmas Eve, from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
