Officials say a police car hit 57-year-old John Howe Jr. near the intersection of Palm Drive and Desert View around 10 p.m. Monday.

The California Highway Patrol had previously reported the victim as a 49 year-old Desert Hot Springs resident.

Investigators said Howe was wearing dark clothing when he jay walked on a section of road that is very dark at night.

They were also investigating if he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Officials have not released the identity of the officer driving the car or if he has been suspended.
