New Batch Of Rain Prompts Driving Alert
Caltrans issued an alert for drivers on Wednesday ahead of a second Pacific storm to watch where they drive.
“Drive with caution and reduce speeds while driving on mountain routes where barricades or cones are in place from storm damage,” said spokesperson Terri Kasinga. “Avoid the cones/barricades and follow all directions from road workers, Highway Patrol, and signage.”
Her words came as some drivers were urged to bring chains with them as they headed out the door. Big Bear was expected to be hard hit.
The San Jacinto Mountains were expected to get hit with snow, as well.
Chain requirements were posted Wednesday morning for highways leading into San Jacinto Mountains communities after snow started falling about dawn.
Snow is falling at the 4,500-foot level, according to the California Highway Patrol website.
Chains or snow tires are required on Highway 243 from the junction with Highway 74 in Mountain Center, through Idyllwild and north on Highway 243 to Lake Fulmor enroute to Banning.
The requirements also are in place on Highway 74, from Mountain Center to Pinyon Drive in Pinyon Pines in the Santa Rosa Mountains above Palm Desert
Caltrans listed the following additional areas under chain control on Wednesday:
SR-18 from Lake Gregory Dr. (front side) to Cactus Flats (backside) (SBd Mtns)
SR-38 from Angelus Oaks to Big Bear Dam (SBd Mtns)
