3.7 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Part Of Coachella Valley

A magnitude 3.7 earthquake, centered in the mountains between Hemet and Idyllwild, hit the Inland Empire at 9:30 a.m. today.

Automated seismographs operated by the USGS placed the epicenter about 7 miles west of Idyllwild and 9 miles east of Hemet and 19 miles west southwest of Palm Springs.

“I felt a little jolt. I wasn’t sure what it was at first,” said Gary Budnick of Gary’s Deli. “It was not too bad.”

Kathleen Chaney, who works at Florest on the Forest, said she also felt the earthquake but that it happen quickly. “It was very light,” she said.

It was felt as a strong jolt in Palm Springs, about 20 miles to the east.

Persons in Temecula, Riverside, Coachella and Carlsbad, as well as elsewhere in western Riverside and northern San Diego counties. logged onto a USGS website to report feeling it.
