Saul Martinez Elementary Lockdown Lifted After Gunshots Heard

A Mecca elementary school was locked down for about an hour today, while deputies searched for a reported gunman who reportedly fired shots near the school.

Riverside County sheriff’s deputies were acting on “second-hand information” about a person carrying a gun near Saul Martinez Elementary School, 65705 Johnson St., department spokeswoman Herlinda Valenzuela said.

“We have not been able to locate anyone with any type of weapon,” she said.

Deputies got a about 12:55 p.m. and told school officials to hold students in their classrooms.

The lockdown was lifted at 1:45 p.m., according to Lorena Servin of the Coachella Valley Unified School District.
