Modernism Weekend Rolls Through Weekend

The sixth annual Palm Springs Modernism Week has come to the Coachella Valley.

The event, which lasts through Feb. 27, will pay homage to the ideals of mid-century modern design, architecture and culture.

“Every year thousands of visitors from around the world come to town to buy furniture, take architectural tours and attend hip and sophisticated soirees,” said Mary Jo Ginther, director of the Palm Springs Board of Tourism.

The 11-day event officially began Thursday when Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet “flipped the switch” to light up fixtures on significant mid-century modern building facades along Palm Canyon Drive.

The buildings, which run through uptown and downtown Palm Springs, include Oasis Tower, the Palm Springs Visitors Center and the Laine Building.

They will remain lit throughout Modernism Week.

“I am honored to be given the privilege to illuminate some of our town’s most significant modern treasures,” Pougnet said. “This is a very special celebration in which we’ll light up the Palm Springs night.”

The 11th annual Palm Springs Modernism Show will run Friday through Monday at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

It’s the first time it will be extended to a four-day event. And it’s a big opportunity for local dealers.

“It’s one of our big selling opportunities. We’re an internet-based group, so this is one of the times when we get our name out in front of people and make a lot of contacts,” said John Gilmer, a dealer with Porter & Plunk in Palm Springs.

The show brings together more than 75 national and international fine art and decorative dealers, who will put mid-century furniture, artwork and jewelry on display.
