Donations Pouring In For Fallen Officer
Donations are pouring in for the family of fallen Cathedral City police officer Jermaine Gibson.
Gibson, 29, died last week during a high-speed chase.
According to police, Gibson lost control of his police cruiser and slammed into a tree on Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs.
The car burst into flames. He died at the scene.
Gibson leaves behind a wife and a 4-week-old child.
The Cathedral City police officers association is taking the lead in fundraising for the family.
?It?s paying bills or travel or food, things for the baby. All of the money we collect as part of the Cathedral City police officers foundation is going straight to the family,? said Albert Holloway, an officer with the CCPOA.
Holloway said dozens of people have dropped off donations at the Cathedral City Police Department.
Bob Owen, from Palm Desert, dropped off a check for Gibson?s family.
?We?ve been pretty broken hearted ever since we heard the news about what happened. We?re praying for his wife and his little baby,? said Owen.
There?s been many like Owen, who have donated money to an officer they?ve never met. But they?re still grateful for his sacrifice.
?Whether it?s in California, Nevada, all the way in New York, anytime an officer dies in the line of duty it?s gut-wrenching but at the same time the outpouring of support is just beautiful,? said Holloway.
The help isn?t just coming from people in Cathedral City, but from around the nation.
And it?s not just cash donations — thoughts, prayers and flowers have all gone to Gibson?s family.
Joey Riso dropped off flowers in behalf of Cathedral City?s police chief.
?You don?t have the right words and that?s why we make the gestures we do, with flowers and with gifts. It?s a way of saying the things you don?t know how to say,? said Riso, with Desert Floral Importers.
Gibson?s funeral is set for Friday.
