College Of The Desert Radio Station Goes Live
College of the Desert will hit the airwaves for the first time today.
The community college will launch its first radio station — KCOD, AM- 1620 — today at 2 p.m., professor Laurilie Jackson said.
The student-led lineup will include music programming, cultural commentary and a comedy hour.
“This radio station is a stepping stone that will allow my fellow students the media-training necessary to be successful in mass media,” said Jayel Aheram, KCOD station manager. “It is also an opportunity for us students to reach out to the community and for the community to reach out back to us.”
The station will broadcast five days a week, Monday through Friday, with both live shows and pre-recorded broadcasts.
Students will compose the radio station staff, working as both producers and on-air talents for each show. Several students will serve as DJs as well.
“KCOD gives students the opportunity to perfect their skills as announcers and to be fully prepared for the competitive broadcasting field,” Jackson said. “It’s a dream come true for students studying media at COD.”
The school will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on campus in the Diesel Mechanics Building, in rooms G and 23, at 2 p.m. when the station launches. A reception will follow.
