Power Outage Hits Palm Desert, Palm Springs As High Nears 100

A power outage has hit an area of downtown Palm Springs just hours after another outage hit a large area of Palm Desert.

Southern California Edison officials said they were looking into the cause of the outage in Palm Springs, which was reported around 2 p.m. on Thursday and affected 800 customers. That was reduced to about 400 by mid-afternoon.

By 4 p.m., all but 208 customers were still without power and air conditioning.

They estimated the power would be restored by 5 p.m.

Traffic lights were without power on Tahquitz Canyon Road near the intersections of Indian Canyon and Calle Encilia, according to News Channel 3 viewers and Palm Springs police. The Spa Hotel and Hilton were without power, as were several other business in the downtown area.

The outage in Palm Desert, which happened around 11:20 a.m. affected more than 2,000 customers at one point. Many had their power restored by 12:15 p.m., but more than 100 were still without air conditioning after 4 p.m.

This outage was caused by downed power lines in the Avenue of the States neighborhood.

The temperature at 4 p.m. was 99 degrees in Palm Desert.
