Oasis Country Club Hosts Marines On Memorial Day

Many people across the desert celebrated Memorial Day by honoring those who serve and protect our country. The members at the Oasis Country Club in Palm Desert wanted to thank some servicemen in person, so they opened their doors to a group of Marines from the 29 Palms base.

The members at the country club funded and planned a special day for the Marines. They were picked up from the base and brought to a luncheon where many were able to express their thanks in person. Then the Marines were treated to a round of golf. “It’s really, really special,” said Staff Sergeant Richard Boyd. “You don’t get all these offers all that often, and when you do it’s pretty special to come out here, especially to be supported by a local community like this.”

Sergeant Troy McGinn added, “It’s good, they give us the opportunity to come down here, meet with some other veterans and people that really support the military in general and put on a good show and take care of us.”

The golf and lunch were a small token of appreciation for the club for the immense sacrifices from the group of men. “It chokes me up a little bit to see these guys here, and these young guys. We know what these guys are doing for us,” said member Paul Rustigian. “It’s an honor to have them here and we’re happy it worked out.”

The event was spearheaded by club member Betty Nash and garnered the support from the entire community. Lance Corporal Derek Beattie expressed his gratitude for Nash, “There’s really no amount of words to express the thanks for what they’ve done. For Betty Nash, we’re very grateful for what she’s done and everyone else.”

Even amidst all the fun and food, the Marines were sure to remind people of the true meaning of Memorial Day. “It’s a day to remember all that’s gone on, to support the service members and really look back on everything that’s happened and think about what they’ve done for you and for everybody else, so it’s a good day,” said McGinn.
