Interstate 10 Closures At N. Indian Canyon

Motorists will have to deal with full freeway closures all week beginning tonight while construction workers take apart the old North Indian Canyon Drive overpass.

As the next step in the ongoing Coachella Valley Corridor Improvement Project, lanes of Interstate 10 will be closed nightly today through Saturday at the Indian Canyon exit, according to Dennis Green of the Riverside County Transportation Department.

The work will remove the old bridge across the freeway. Traffic was scheduled to be diverted to the new bridge, which is now halfway complete, beginning Sunday evening.

“We’re going to knock down the existing Indian Canyon bridge so we can build the second half and get out of Dodge,” Green said.

Beginning at 9 p.m.Tuesday, all lanes of westbound Interstate 10 will be closed, as will two of the eastbound lanes. Those closures will flip directions the next night and all westbound lanes will again be blocked off Thursday. Two lanes of the westbound portion of the freeway will be closed both Friday and Saturday.

All closures will last from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the next day, Green said.

Detours using other freeway exits are suggested as Green said those motorists who have to be diverted via the on- and off-ramps, could be delayed for up to an hour.

Work over the weekend connected a revamped westbound on-ramp to the new overpass while all traffic was shifted to the new bridge.

When complete, the widened overpass will include six lanes for cars, a bike path on each side and better aligned on- and off-ramps, according to the Riverside County Transportation Department.
