Indio Police Ready For Summer Suppression, Extra Patrols

The Indio Police Department will be taking some extra steps to make the streets safer this summer.

The department will once again use its “Summer Suppression” program — which will put more officers on patrol during weekend nights.

Patrols will focus on problem areas where people hang-out — like strip malls and parks.

Chief Brad Ramos says the program won’t take away from other resources, despite the department being down 18 officers because of budget cuts.

“What we’re able to do with our limited resources is take those people working other assignments that close down for the summer. Re-deploy those at night where we get the best bang for our dollar and we’re able to double or triple on some nights the number of black and whites that are out there on the streets of Indio,” said Ramos.

The program will include an additional six to eight uniformed officers patrolling on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

It begins this weekend.
