New Safety Regulations For Baby Cribs Take Effect
A new era in child safety begins Tuesday with new rules from the Consumer Product Safety Commission on infant cribs.
Drop-side cribs, the standard of the industry for decades are now banned. Tthe drop-sides have a rail that can be lowered or raised to allow parents easier access to lift a baby. Too often children have been trapped and suffocated in those rails. “What has happened in past, is that the baby can get wedged here between the mattress and this side, because it can detach and come loose, and that’s been the problem with the drop-sides,” said Patty Davis, a spokesperson for the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Since 2000 at least 32 infant deaths have been blamed on the drop-side cribs. Since 2007 the Consumer Product Safety Commission has ordered the recall of nearly 11-million cribs.
The new standards make it illegal to make the cribs and sell them, new or used, even if it’s at a garage sale.
