Cathedral City Offers New Low Income Housing
Cathedral city has a new low income apartment complex that will not only provide affordable housing options for residents, it will also bring the option of new ammenities for the entire community free of cost.
Paola Treleani was one of the first official River Canyon residents who moved in to the compex in april. She said that she had to make some changes in her life.
“I downsized to where I was paying a mortgage, and it was a few thousand dollar amount mortgage, so coming down to something like this, it just helps me support my family easier, and it’s not so bad, ” said Treleani.
Riverside County was also involved with this development. Fourth district supervisor, John Benoit, said that it is important to think about the community when it comes to places like River Canyon.
“The thing about this is that you take a very low income family and put them in an environment where they actually can enjoy some of the ammenities that hopefully will shape the kids in a fashion that will keep them off the streets.”
The YMCA of the desert partnered with the Hope Through Housing Foundation and the developer to bring after school programs which are not just for residents but anyone who needs it can take advantage.
“All our services are free and we offer homework assistance, enrichment programming we have a literacy program we provide a free snack, ” said Susan Neufeld from Hope Through Housing Foundation.
The 60 unit complex is now at capacity but those who are interested can go on a waiting list. There’s already a complex in the works in indio.
Treleani says she feels lucky to have a safe place for her and her kids: “Overall this is just a great community, i’m glad they opened it up to the public, it’s really nice here i’m happy.”
