Despite Rain, Firefighters Battle Brush Fire Near Whitewater

Flames scorched about three acres of brush today west of Whitewater Canyon, but no structures were burned and no one was injured.

The fire was reported around 9:10 a.m. at westbound Interstate 10 and Highway 11 near Palm Springs, according to Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Cheri Patterson.

More than 80 federal, state and county firefighters, utilizing two tankers and one water-dropping helicopter, held the fire to about three acres.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
