Bono Mack Applauds Debt Deal, Warns It’s Not Enough
Rep. Mary Bono Mack says the debt deal passed in Washington prevented a financial disaster in the short term. But she warns it won’t be enough.
“The real work begins now, and that is to seriously rein in our spending — to get the budget under control. Regardless of the deal that was passed, Congress has to do that,” said Bono Mack.
During a news conference at her district office in Palm Desert, Bono Mack said more needs to be done to calm the fears of employers and consumers.
“Just lifting the debt ceiling does not give people confidence that Washington is going to rein in spending,” said Bono Mack.
Bono Mack voted for the debt deal. Her husband, Florida Rep. Connie Mack, did not.
But she does support his so-called “Mack Penny Plan”, which calls for a 1 percent cut in spending for six years and a spending cap in year seven.
Mack claims this plan will balance the budget in eight years.
“When people recognize that every family has had to take one penny out of every dollar of their spending, it’s common sense that Washington should do it as well,” said Bono Mack.
