Teenager Accused Of Smuggling 27 Pounds Of Cocaine

U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a teenager on Tuesday, accused of trying to smuggle more than 27 pounds of cocaine from Mexico.

The drugs were discovered around 1 p.m. at the Highway 111 checkpoint near Niland, according to a news release by the U.S. Border Patrol.

A canine team alerted authorities they found something suspicious while checking a brown Ford Taurus, so the car was moved to a secondary inspection.

During the search, agents discovered 12 concealed packages inside two non-factory compartments built into the back passenger seats.

Agents determined the substance inside was cocaine, and estimated its street value at $871,000.

The 19-year-old suspect was placed under arrest and turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
