Storm Forces Cal Trans To Require Chains In Mountains

Chain control began on State Route 2 in the Wrightwood area on Monday and on State Route 243 in Idyllwild as a storm system moved into Southern California.

The California Department of Transportation added Mountain Center to the list of areas where chains or snow tires are now required.

The route on State Route 74 was covered with snow between the junction from State Route 243 to the Pinyon Drive at 1:30 p.m., according to Cal Trans.

According to CalTrans’ website, all routes to the San Bernardino Mountains, Wrightwood, and Idyllwild are under chain control, and there is a chance that conditions may be escalated tonight, so be prepared and bring chains.

Interstate 15 in the Cajon Pass is currently under escort-only by the California Highway Patrol. Be advised that road closures may happen if accidents or weather conditions warrant.

I-15 in the High Desert and I-10 through the Banning, Beaumont and Yucaipa areas may experience snow, so be advised that this section of I-15 may also go to escort status or closure in the event of accidents or heavy snow tonight.
