New Year Brings DUI Patrols
Authorities will be on the lookout for intoxicated drivers and those shooting off firearms over the New Year’s weekend in the eastern Coachella Valley.
The Indio Police Department will have extra officers on duty to enforce laws against drunken driving and illegally discharging firearms, spokesman Benjamin Guitron said.
Sheriff’s deputies in Coachella, Thermal, Mecca, Oasis, Vista and Santa Rosa will increasing patrols “to deal with a zero tolerance for illegal shooting of firearms into the air during this holiday season,” Sgt. Mike Tapp said.
“The intent of this zero-tolerance patrol and prosecution of all violators is to reduce the number injuries and deaths from stray bullets,” he said.
Unlawful firing of a firearm is a felony and can bring a state prison sentence.
Deputies in Coachella will operate a DUI checkpoint from 7 tonight through 1:30 a.m. Saturday.
