‘Variety Magazine’ Honors Charlize Theron In Palm Springs

The desert didn’t empty of stars after the Palm Springs International Film Festival Gala ended.

Entertainment buff “Variety” honored Charlize Theron with the Indie Impact award for her contributions to independent films.

“I know that the Indie world had an impact on me, so I can talk about that. My career would have been very different. I feel 100% that I have the career I have today because of independent film making,” Theron said.

The beauty humbly accepted variety’s honor, while proudly speaking about the evolution of independent films.

“Ten years ago it was so split, 15 years ago it was so split. Everyone knew when you did your dirty independent film and your sexy studio film. That’s changed today, and I’m so proud to be a part of that,” she said.

Variety also recognized its “Ten Directors To Watch” list, which spotlights the most exciting new talents in the directing world.

“We have a very good track record doing this. We spotted Chris Nolan early in his career,” Variety Executive Editor Steve Gaydos said.

“I’ve been making feature films for twelve years now. This is my fourth feature, and thought this was the most modest film I’ve made, but it’s proven contrary. I’ve been traveling with it for six months,” director Phillipe Falardeau said.

The directors all had similar advice for aspiring film makers, the underlying message being ‘just do it’.

“These days, you don’t really have an excuse to not just pick up a camera and make a movie. It really is true. Not every story can be told in a low-budget way, but there are so many wonderful stories that can be,” director Lynn Shelton said.

“Make sure your script is good. When everyone says its good, go back again, and make it even better,” director Michael Roskam said.

So someday, you can feel like this.

“Going to work everyday is a joy. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I never feel worthy of these things. So thank you to Variety, thank you,” Theron said.
