Humana Day Spices Up The Desert

Whether we follow suit or not, we all know a healthy lifestyle starts with eating those greens.

“You are what you eat. As we all know, good health, a good diet is a part of that,” Humana spokesperson Jim Turner said.

The Certified Farmer’s Market in Old Town La Quinta hosted Humana Day in the desert. People came out to take advantage of vendors who produce organic and spray-free products.

“When you look at everything that’s available here, you start to get a good feel for the kinds of things you could and should be eating,” Turner said.

Humana added a new spice to the weekly farmer’s market.

“We’re handing out pedometers. We’re trying to give out 12,000 pedometers this week. Every step people take and upload will count toward a charitable donation we’ll make after the tournament,” Turner added.

A “chopped” style cooking contest also attracted an audience. It featured La Quinta High School culinary arts students who know the importance of knowing your way around the kitchen.

“I have a lot of friends that don’t know how to cook, so they go through the drive thru all the time. It’s something you need to know. The basics at least,” La Quinta High School culinary arts student Cassie Mcintyre said.

Humana day infused healthy food and fun — and had quite a following.

“I’ve done a few of the, the juices and so forth, it’s fun stuff,” Jeff Edgecumb said.

“It’s pretty important. It’s something that we all strive to (do), especially in this area. With an older population it’s very important. And its taken on, it’s more important with the younger audience as well, the younger generation,” Bob Buttaro said.

Humana day showed that, big or small — healthy eating is for all of us.
