Mark Wilson Wins Inaugural Humana Challenge

In a tournament marked with a controversial name change, the Humana Challenge — formerly the Bob Hope Classic — closed on Sunday with its inaugural champion.

Mark Wilson made a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win on Sunday evening, beating Robert Garrigus, John Mallinger and Johnson Wagner by two strokes in a dramatic dusk finish to the wind-delayed tournament.

Wind gusts that eventually topped 90 mph tore through the Palm Springs area on Saturday, forcing PGA leaders to stop play.

Strong gusts tore down the scoreboard, injuring at least one person, and forcing the evacuation of the course.

A calmer Sunday morning started with Wilson leading by three strokes.

As evening fell on the desert, Garrigus barely missed a 35-foot eagle putt that would have given him the lead when Wilson made his birdie try in the disappearing light, calmly celebrating his fifth career PGA Tour victory.

In addition to a large purse, Wilson will also receive the Bob Hope Memorial Award, which was unveiled last week as the tournament started.
