Winds Blow Fans Out Of The Humana Challenge

Of all the changes the 2012 Humana Challenge brought, the one Mother Nature brought was the most unexpected.

“Everything was flying, all the trash cans were going, and over there, one of the tents and scoreboard came down, and we almost flew over at the holes ourselves,” Humana Challenge fan Birgitta Grohs said.

“The wind was blowing so hard the sand was just penetrating us, it was very difficult,” Humana Challenge fan Jack Finholm said.

High winds speeds caused tournament officials to evacuate everyone from the Bob Hope Square, the area where fans could eat and drink.

“I saw the Humana tent go down which was really scary. I just hope to God no one was under there,” Jennifer Johnson of Jennifer’s Kitchen said.

Over on the Palmer Private course, players say they didn’t feel the wind quite as much.

“It was alright for us, we actually couldn’t understand why they called it, but then I heard scoreboards blew over, people got trapped in porta-potties,” actor and celebrity golfer Oliver Hudson said.

Shortly after 1:00, play was suspended. Players hurried into the clubhouse, and shocked fans stood by wondering what was going on.

“The area over here where the food is was just crazy, everything looked like it was going to fall. The merchandise tent, sounded like the tent was coming down when we were in there,” Humana Challenge fan Justin Rogina said.

“It was hectic. But that’s it, it’s over, no mas,” Hudson said.
