DHS garage fire uncovers illegal marijuana grow operation

Riverside County firefighters uncovered a marijuana grow operation while they were battling a garage fire in Desert Hot Springs on Wednesday.

Fire department spokeswoman Melody Hendrickson said firefighters arrived at a home on the 18400 block of Sagebrush Trail at around 10 a.m. to find smoke coming from a detached garage.

During their investigation, they uncovered large marijuana plants, the result of an illegal marijuana grow operation, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

One person was taken into custody.

Investigators would not say how many plants were found or if they were somehow related to the cause of the fire.

No one was injured.
