Wind and Rain Cancel Many Desert Activities
Wild wind blows through the desert, but it doesn’t move prepared people. The taste of La Quinta was cancelled early in the day.
“The wind was blowing very heavily, and we met with the team members and the board members and decided that probably the most prudent thing to do was cancel it, for public safety due to the high winds and the potentially extreme weather,” president of the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce David Archer said.
Cancelling an event expecting 750 people took some time.
“We started all the outbound calls to all the prepaid folks. We called all the restaurants to make sure they knew we weren’t going to hold the event,” Archer said.
Still, some people inevitably showed up, though.
“We found that they had cancelled it and we were disappointed,” Paul said.
“Almost everyone I talked to walking around Old Town was here for the event,” Archer said.
While the wind cancelled plans in the east valley, on the west end the Palm Springs Aeriel Tramway didn’t even open. The first tram leaves at 8 a-m. Around 7:30, rides were delayed. The tram remained closed for the day.
For some, the wind didn’t affect their plans.
“We’ve already done everything we were going to do, except pack, so that’s ok,”
However, for others who planned on nothing but sun, “I came 3000 miles from Pennsylvania for sunlight and here we are,” Pennsylvania visitor Star Man said.
Regardless, one thing’s for sure.
“Mother nature has a mind of her own,so you just have to go with it.”
The taste of La Quinta is rescheduled for April 7th. Whether or not the tram will be open tomorrow will be decided in the morning.
