Kraft Nabisco Championship To Tee Off This Week

Players are getting ready to tee off for the 41st annual Kraft Nabisco Championship. The tournament will showcase 120 top notch golfers throughout April 1 at the Misson Hills Country Club.

Tournament director, Gabe Codding, told us the event is considered the “Master’s of ladies golf.”

“This is golf’s first major, it’s the perfect chance to see the best women’s golfers in the world,” said Codding.

The events start Tuesday with the Fresh & Easy Kraft Foods Legacy Challenge — with more than 18 golf legends, like Amy Alcott, teaming up with top junior golfers.

“It’s a way for these girls to play with the greatest generation of players of all time,” said Alcott.

The legacy challenge will be followed by a celebrity pro-am on Tuesday and Wednesday, then go right into the championship Thursday through Sunday.

“So excitement here every day!” said Codding.

The tournament is all about longstanding traditions, one of them is seeing the winner take the “Champion’s Plunge” into Poppie’s Pond.

Alcott said she spontaneously took the first plunge back in 1988.

“It was a moment of excitement and exuberance and I just let it fly!” said Alcott.

For golf pro Katie Futcher, this will be her third year competing for the trophy and she said she wants to end with a splash.

“I’ve always said I wanted to do a cannonball off the bridge so hopefully I can this year,” said Futcher.

Alcott will join defending champion Stacy Lewis will put final touches on Poppie’s Pond during a ceremony on Monday at 11 a.m.

Kraft will donate a mobile food pantry to FIND food bank in Indio on Wednesday. The company will also donate one million meals to the national hunger-relief charity Feeding America on Sunday.
