Man, 2 teens arrested after Coachella high-speed chase
A man and two teenagers were behind bars today on suspicion of leading authorities on a chase through Coachella and Indio in a stolen car, which one of the teens was allegedly driving.
Alberto Cortez, 18, of Coachella and two male minors were arrested around 7:15 p.m. Monday at Avenue 53 and Calle Emelia in Coachella. Someone reported a vehicle theft at 6:45 p.m. near Tyler Street and Avenue 50, sheriff’s Sgt. Juan Zamora said.
The stolen vehicle, a 1990 Toyota Camry, was reported traveling west on Interstate 10 near the Golf Center Parkway exit ramp in Indio. Deputies tracked the car down as it headed east on Avenue 44, Zamora said.
“The suspects managed to evade the officers for a short period of time by driving at high speeds in a reckless manner southbound on the 86 Expressway,” Zamora said.
Deputies and officers from the Indio Police Department found the Camry near Avenue 52 and Tyler Street in Coachella, where the suspects took off again.
Authorities caught up with them at Avenue 53 and Calle Emelia, Zamora said.
Cortez was booked at the county jail in Indio and the two teenagers were booked at juvenile hall in Indio. He was being held in lieu of $5,000 bail and was expected to be arraigned Thursday at the Larson Justice Center in Indio, according to jail records.
