Palm Springs streets reopen after bomb scare

South Civic Center Drive was shut down for three hours on Wednesday as a hazardous materials team detonated a device resembling a pipe bomb on the front lawn of the Palm Springs Police Department.

Police spokesman Mike Kovaleff said someone found the device near Joyce Drive and Jan Circle near the Palm Springs Country Club. They brought it to the police station just before 2 p.m. to turn it in.

The device never made it passed the lobby, he said, and has since been placed on the front lawn.

Kovaleff said the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Hazardous Device Team will help determine if the device was active and where it came from.

As a result, South Civic Drive was closed between East Tahquitz Canyon Way and East Baristo Road from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Police advised everyone against bringing any explosive device to a police or fire station. If you find a similar object, call 911.
