5th pipe bomb found, San Rafael Drive closed again

A fifth pipe bomb has been found along San Rafael Drive in Palm Springs, prompting police to shut down the street for a second time.

Palm Springs police spokesman Mike Kovaleff said a resident called police around 3:15 p.m. Thursday reporting he had found a pipe bomb-like device in the driveway of his home on the 300 block of San Rafael Drive.

As a result, East San Rafael Drive has been closed between Avenida Cabelleros and Indian Canyon Drive. Police urge drivers to stay away from the area.

The resident who found this device is not the same person who found three similar devices on Thursday morning and another on Tuesday, Kovaleff said.

In the event there are other devices still undiscovered,, Kovaleff said cell phones should not be used to report the incident to police, as they can often be triggers to an explosive device.

If you have information about this case, call Palm Springs police 760-323-8116 or Crime Stoppers at 760-341-STOP.
