Palm Springs Tram shut down due to downed lines

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway was closed to visitors on Monday after construction crews accidentally brought down phone lines, said a tram spokeswoman.

“The tramway is closed and scheduled to reopen tomorrow,” said Lena Zimmerschied. “There are campers and employees currently at the Mountain Station, who will be brought down today.”

Southern California Edison told KESQ construction crews hit a telephone pole on the roadway that leads to the popular attraction causing a chain reaction of phone and power lines falling around the intersection with Palm Canyon Drive.

The downed lines resulted in a power outage that affected customers along Vista Chino and North Indian Canyon Drive, according to SCE.

Zimmersheid said the tram’s power was not affected.

It was not known when power would be restored to the customers.
