2 CHP officers return to work after I-10 shooting

The two officers on paid administrative leave for a shooting that left a man dead on Interstate 10 in Indio are back to work, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Joe Zagorski said an internal investigation concluded that the one officer who shot Robert Shirar, 32, after a traffic collision under the Jefferson Street overpass on May 21, did nothing wrong.

Shirar later died at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage.

Both officers were placed on leave until the investigation was completed, which is standard procedure, said Zagorski.

A formal investigation is still being conducted by the Indio Police Department.

Spokesman Ben Guitron saidevidence indicates Shirar made a threat to officers just before the shooting.

Guitron said he would notelaborate onthe threat because it is part of an ongoing investigationas policewait for the coroner’s office and CHP to provide them with what he called “key information” about the incident.
