Brush fire burning near Windy Point

A brush fire is burning near Windy Point in Palm Springs.

The US Forest Service has assumed command from Palm Springs Fire, who were first on scene when flames were spotted on the mountainside near Windy Point.

A commander on scene says lightning strikes in the area sparked the blaze just before 2pm. So far 35 acres are reported blackened by the blaze. Ground crews are having to battle the flames, due to bad weather no aircraft is being allowed in the area.

Palm Springs Police also sent out an alert stating that inbound Highway 111 is closed for crews fighting the fire.

No word on how many acres are burning at this time.
