Man arrested after leaving infant in hot car

A Desert Hot Springs man is behind bars after police say he left an infant inside a hot car in 100 degree heat.

Police arrested Narcisco Mercado on suspicion of willful cruelty to a child with possible injury or death.

Authorities say, a little after 6 last night, several 911 calls came into the Palm Springs Police Deparment reporting an infant had been locked inside a vehicle in the parking lot of office depot on Ramon Road.

Investigators say, Mercado the step grandfather left the one year old child locked inside for about 10 minutes with no air conditioning with outside temperatures reaching 100 degrees.

The child is fine and now in the custody of his mother. Mercado is being held at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.
