AmeriCorps needs your help to keep helping students

Believing reading is the basis for learning, AmeriCorps Promote starts with the ABCs. This tutor program focuses on literacy for kindergarten through third grade children in east valley elementary schools, teaching reading fluency to 810 english learners and “at risk” students reading below grade level.

“So they can get to the level they need to be by the time they leave third grade,” Adam Sanchez, the AmeriCorps Program Manager, said.

AmeriCorps organizers say if a student is still reading below grade level past third grade, he or she is less likely to succeed. Though the organization is largely funded by a grant, it needs to match funds for the program to make sure it can keep running.

“We are preparing the next generation of work force, making sure our young people are prepared: reading and writing and math skills,” Coachella Mayor Eduardo Garcia said.

Schools involved are asked to donate, but with budget cuts, this has been challenging for the schools.

“We’re looking for a $50,000 match. Obviously we’re not looking for one check from someone,” Garcia said.

AmeriCorps Promote needs to raise additional funds to keep this much needed program in the schools. You can either donate cash or give a pledge.
