Fast moving brushfire in Banning nearly contained

Firefighters built containment lines around 80 percent of a 280-acre brush fire Sunday. It was caused by gunfire and threatened a handful of homes in the San Gorgonio pass south of Banning.

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries during the blaze that started around 6:10 p.m. Saturday at Old Banning-Idyllwild Road and Shirleon Drive.

One of the injured firefighters who is with a California Department of Corrections crew was taken to an area hospital for treatment, said Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann.

The blaze was determined to have been caused by shooters, but Hagemann reported that no one was detained. No one has been evacuated from their homes, but the fire is burning northwest towards some residences, Hagemann said.

The fire was at midday estimated to have burned 300 acres, but that figure was revised in the afternoon. The Los Angeles County Fire Department was among the 10 agencies fighting the flames, Hagemann said.
