Update: Marine Killed in Officer Involved Shooting
Investigators are waiting on autopsy results to learn more about the officer involved shooting in Palm Springs.
The coroner’s office has now identified the marine shot early Saturday morning as 22year-old Allan De Villena II.
Police say De Villena refused to turn off his car and was shot, when he tried to drive off, hitting an officer.
De Villena died at the scene. His passenger was arrested. Police say De Villena and the passenger may also be connected to a reported theft that occurred earlier that night. Both officers are on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.
Tonight, Palm Springs Mayor, Steve Pougnet issued this statement:
“The City of Palm Springs is deeply saddened by the loss of United States Marine Cpl. Allan De Villena. Our thoughts and prayers are with the individuals, families and loved ones of everyone involved in this tragic incident. At the request of the Chief of Police, the District Attorney’s Office is conducting a parallel and independent investigation of this incident. The Palm Springs Police Department is working in full cooperation with the District Attorney’s Office. All facts and evidence generated from any and all sources will be subject to the District Attorney’s Office review. The investigative team is committed to conducting a complete and thorough investigation and continues to ask for the community’s patience during this time. We encourage any witnesses or anyone with information regarding this incident to call the Palm Springs Police Department at (760) 323-8116. Additional contact information for the District Attorney’s Office will be provided within the next 24 hours. The Police Chief will be available to provide appropriate comment as the investigation progresses. In order not to prejudice or influence the outcome of the investigation, all other City of Palm Springs officials will refrain from further public comment until the investigation has concluded.”
