More election results released by Registrar of Voters

A week after the election, ballot processing continues at the Riverside County Registrar of Voters office and two local races are still too close to call.

In the race for Mayor of Cathedral City, results released Tuesday evening show that Challenger Chip Yarborough’s lead over incumbent Kathy DeRosa was cut from 201 votes to 180 votes.

In the battle for a seat on the Palm Desert City Council, Mayor Pro-Tem Bill Kroonen now leads Susan Marie Webber by 47 votes, up from 33.

When it comes to races too close to call, county supervisor John Benoit believes we would have a better idea by now on the outcome of those races, if more people who request mail-in ballots actually mailed their ballots in advance of the election, rather than dropping them off at polling places on election day.

“The signature by law has to be compared with the signature on the registration card before it can be counted, so that’s a process that’s very labor intensive and takes time,” said Benoit.

In Riverside County, more than 50 percent of voters use mail-in ballots.

County wide, approximately 60,000 provisional and 9,000 damaged ballots that require duplication still must be processed. The next updated results will be posted at6 p.m. on Friday.
