Banning man shot and killed

A man who was shot multiple times staggered into the Consuelos Mexican Restaurant in Banning Wednesday night in an apparent effort to seek help.

Police responding to a report of shots fired about 5:35 p.m. eventually found the man at the restaurant on Ramsey Street. They realized he’d been shot and tried to render first aid.

CAL Fire also responded to the restaurant and tried to help the man, but he later died at San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital.

The dead man was described as a Banning man in his mid-20’s.

Banning Police Chief Leonard Purvis said no suspects were in custody, and officers were still trying to piece together what happened. Purvis said officers believe the man was actually shot somewhere on North Phillips street.

“I know that he was seeking assistance, when he went in there (to the Mexican restaurant). He was trying to get help for his injuries, thinking or believing that there would be patrons and or employees that would help him,” said Purvis.

Purvis said this is the city’s second homicide of the year.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Banning Police Department.
