24th Palm Springs International Film Fest kicks off
A sold out evening on the red carpet jump started opening night of the world-renown 24th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival on Thursday.
All eyes in the cinema world are set on the Coachella Valley these next two weeks, featuring award-winning films and some of the biggest stars in Hollywood.
Movie buffs near and far hope to catch a glimpse.
“I fly in from New York because it’s exciting and fun to be here in the Coachella Valley to see truly a great explosion of film,” said Harlan Jacobson.
Getting the show started was director Pablo Berger’s film, “Blancanieves.” It’s a silent movie of a reimagined Snow White with a spanish flare.
“What I wanted to do is mix it with the Spanish culture; flamenco, bullfighting, but also give it a new twist,” said Berger.
The film tells the story of a daughter of a famous bullfighter, who is mistreated by her wicked stepmother. She runs away, joins a band of bullfighting dwarfs while discovering her own god-given talent of bullfighting. Her evil stepmother plots to bring her down.
“It’s one of my favorite films of the year. It’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen,” said Film Festival director Darryl Macdonald.
Macdonald adds, there’s more where that came from. There are 180 films that will hit the screens of Palm Springs, from 68 different countries. Tickets go fast.
MacDonald says, “Really all you have to do is pin a schedule on a wall and you’re going to see something great.”
