Kids tee-off and get active during Humana Challenge

Working the green like the pros, junior golfers hit the links for some top-notch tee time during the final round of the Humana Challenge at PGA West in La Quinta on Sunday.

The playtime was all thanks to the First Tee of the Coachella Valley, which teamed up with Lumpy’s golf shops to put on the free “Powerbuilt Junior Golf Clinic.”

The clinic offered kids technique training to master their driving, chipping and putting.

“It gets them out of the house, away from the TV, gets them exercising and learning something they wouldn’t learn elsewhere,” said Stephanie Schuld, who brought her nine-year-old niece Kaleese and nephew.

The event wasn’t only about their golf swing, with health and wellness as the theme, there was also a fitness station to get the 120 kids working up a sweat.

“It’s just fun because it’s like we’re not working out but we are,” said Kaleese, of Palm Springs.

“They’re kind of putting them through the ringer over there. The trainers are making sure knees are up and working them out,” said Randy Corti, the owner of Lumpy’s.

Organizers say it’s a chance to train the next generation how to lead healthier lives.

“The earlier someone can learn it in life, the better,” said Corti.

As the tournament wraps up, Humana, the Clinton Foundation and the kids have a challenge for you.

“If you exercise more, you’ll live a healthier life and probably live longer,” said Kaleese.
