Slain Detective Jeremiah MacKay’s Funeral Underway

A throng of law enforcement officers has turned out for the funeral of a Southern California detective killed in the final standoff with fugitive ex-police officer Christopher Dorner.

A long procession of police cars is following a hearse bringing the body of 35-year-old San Bernardino County sheriff’s Detective Jeremiah MacKay from a San Bernardino mortuary to the San Manuel Amphitheater, where a memorial will begin at late morning Thursday.

The memorial, originally set to begin at 11 a.m., was delayed until 11:30 due to the large number of people in attendance. Eight to ten thousand people are expected to attend, many of them uniformed law enforcement officers.

MacKay was a husband and father of two who had been with the Sheriff’s Department for 15 years and had been a decorated detective since 2006.

Authorities say he became the fourth and final person killed by Dorner on Feb. 12 outside a mountain cabin that would go up in flames after a ferocious shootout. Dorner’s remains were found inside.
