Pedestrian killed walking on I-10

A man walking along westbound Interstate 10 in Indio was struck and killed by a sedan whose driver fled the scene, the California Highway Patrol reported Sunday.

The victim was later identified by the Riverside County Coroner’s Office as Antonio Salazar, 27, of Thermal.

Officers were dispatched at 11:38 p.m. Saturday to the freeway east of Golf Center Parkway where the man was found and pronounced dead by paramedics, the CHP reported.

Salazar was struck from behind in the left lane by a sedan that had been going about the 70 mph speed limit. It may have sustained a broken headlight.

The CHP said it had no reason why the pedestrian was in the fast lane, but said drugs or alcohol may have been involved.
