Elderly woman mauled by dog in San Jacinto

An investigation was under way today into the mauling by a pit bull of a 76-year-old woman in San Jacinto, authorities said.
The woman was walking westbound on Commonwealth Avenue near San Jacinto Avenue around 3:25 p.m. Tuesday when a pit bull attacked her, said Sgt. Rose McKinney of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
“Bystanders attempted to help the victim by hitting the dog with baseball bats to get the dog away from her,” McKinney said.
The woman suffered several severe puncture wounds. She was taken to a hospital for treatment, while the dog was impounded by animal control officers, McKinney said.
Anyone with information about the attack was urged to call sheriff’s investigators at (951) 654-2702.
